Rosmarinus officinalis, derived from the Latin for ‘dew’ ros and ‘sea’ marinus, or ‘dew of the sea’. According to legend, it was draped around the Greek goddess Aphrodite when she rose from the sea. In the Middle Ages it was associated with weddings, evolving into a love charm and symbol of loyalty. It was stuffed into cloth dolls to attract a lover and placed under pillows to ward off nightmares. It was a traditional cure for gout, headaches and colds.

from the Latin mentha, rooted in the Greek word minthe, personified in Greek mythology as Minthe, a nymph who was transformed into a mint plant. In traditional medicine it was used to treat stomach aches and chest pains. In Ancient Europe it was as a room deodorizer, strewn across floors. The essential oil is used in cosmetics, perfumes and aromatherapy. It can also be used as an enviromentally friendly insecticide. Best grown in wet environments and moist soils.

(Thymus) from the Greek thumon  meaning ‘to rise in a cloud’. In Ancient Egypt it was used for embalming and in ancient Greece they burnt it as incense in their temples, believing it was source of courage. The Romans purified their rooms and used it to flavour their cheeses and liqueurs. In the Middle Ages in Europe it was  placed beneath pillows to ward off nightmares and women gave thyme leaves to knights for courage and vigour. Essence of thyme is used in cosmetics.
